CARC announces 2019 ARRL Field Day Scores

The Canton Amateur Radio Club trustees and officers met at 7pm on Thursday July 11th 2019 to go over the 2019 Field Day logs, scores, and submission. Present at the meeting was Dale NX8J, Justin W8JKC, Roger W8VE, John K8ISS, and Dennis K8AGB.

Justin W8JKC presented the log files of both HF stations, the 6M/VHF station, and the GOTA station in a breakdown via Excel spreadsheet. This breakdown, as well as the final ARRL submission will also be presented to the membership at the next club meeting on July 17th 2019.

After reviewing all of the logs, the submission was sent/completed via the ARRL website (shown below). The trustees and officers also held a brief discussion towards preliminary planning for 2020 Field Day; what needs to change, what we could do better, etc.
Any club member having additional comments, suggestions, or concerns should present them to the officers/trustees, preferably at the July 17th 2019 meeting, or via email.

A brief breakdown is as follows:
80M CW QSO: 208
80M PH QSO: 146

40M CW QSO: 366
40M PH QSO: 22
40M DIG QSO: 1

20M CW QSO: 3
20M PH QSO: 30
20M DIG QSO: 91

6M CW QSO: 2
6M PH QSO: 12

This equates to a total of 887 QSO’s made during the 24 hour Field Day period, and a claimed QSO score of 3,118 pts (with 2x emergency power bonus).

For bonus points the club qualified/earned a total of 850 points including:
200 points for 100% Emergency Power
100 points for Media Publicity
100 points for Public Information Table/Booth
100 points for 5 Natural Power QSO
100 points for an Educational Activity
100 points for a Safety Officer
100 points for Social Media
50 points for submitting via the ARRL website.

The final score factoring all QSO’s and bonuses for 2019 comes to 3,968 points.
The club operated as W8AL, Class 2A, ARRL Section OH, with a GOTA call of AC8UE and a total of 38 participants.

Alliance Club holding Technician (Entry Level) Licensing Course

The Alliance Amateur Radio Club, W8LKY, is holding an entry-level Technician licensing course starting July 6th. The class will run for 12 weeks, each Saturday from 5p to 7p, and are held in the Cafeteria Conference Room at Aultman Alliance Hospital (200 E State St, 1st Floor). While the class is completely free, participants will need a USB Flash Drive or SD card with at least 1 GB of free space for the study materials. Planned Website/Email Outage

Due to electrical repairs/upgrades that are being completed at the site that hosts w8al.org, this website and w8al.org email will be down for most of the day on Tuesday, May 28th, starting around 8am. For any questions or concerns during the outage, contact Justin W8JKC at (330) 452-1460.

CARC to hold two public displays of Amateur Radio

The Canton Amateur Radio Club will hold two seperate events demonstrating amateur radio to the public over the next few weeks.

2019 ARRL Field Day Logo

The first event is the annual ARRL Field Day, which takes place on the 4th full weekend in June every year. Join us June 22nd and 23rd at the Dearman Family Farm, located at 2345 Baum St SE in Canton. Starting at about 10am Saturday and running continuously through approximately 2pm Sunday, CARC members will be making contacts (QSO’s) with other ham radio operators throughout the United States and some even globally as part of an emergency preparedness communications exercise. See http://arrl.org/field-day for more information. Set-up for Field Day 2019 will take place on Friday, June 21st starting at 4pm. Licensed amateur radio operators can call us on the club repeater, 146.790- PL 141.3 for talk-in, directions, or other information.

Following Field Day, CARC members, in cooperation with the Madge Youtz branch of the Stark County District Library system, will hold a public display of amateur radio. Join us from 1pm to 4pm on Wednesday June 26th at the Madge Youtz branch, located at 2921 Mahoning Rd NE in Canton. CARC members will be demonstrating and explaining what amateur radio is all about. Upcoming Stark County VEC Exam Session

The Stark County VE Team has announced an upcoming exam session.

The session is set for Saturday, May 25th at 8:30am.
Please arrive between 8:00 and 8:30 to allow time for registration and other paperwork.

It will be held in the Stark County EMA/EOC, which is the lower level of the Stark County Sheriff Complex located at 4500 Atlantic Blvd NE in Canton (US RT 62 between Broadway and Kirby/Harmont).

Park in the visitors lot (first lot on the right when you enter the complex), walk straight across to the main Sheriff’s office entrance (not the jail entrance on your left). Watch for the signs.

Both sessions are conducted thru ARRL/VEC.
